Firefox 3.5.1 Fix for Vulnerability

Yesterday I wrote about a vulnerability recently discovered in the month old Firefox 3.5. The folks at Mozilla were quick to find a solution and have published a new build which is safe to use.

If you’re a Firefox users go to the following site to update your browser.

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/firefox.html

If you followed the instructions to disable the JIT(Just-in-Time) compiler you’ll want to enable it again once you’ve installed version 3.5.1.

  1. Enter about:config in the browser’s location bar.
  2. Type jit in the Filter box at the top of the config editor.
  3. Double-click the line containing javascript.options.jit.contentsetting the value to true.

Bill, it looks as if they've discovered a vulnerability in FF 3.5.1 as well: https://isc.sans.org/diary.html?storyid=6829. Is this the same sort of problem as before? If we've updated to 3.5.1 and changed the jit in about:config back to true, should we change it back again to false?

No, the flaw that has been mentioned is not the same kind of vulnerability as reported before. At this time, there are no sites who have been able to distribute malware via what Mozilla currently considers a bug.

Heya Bill, you've made notes on how you hate third party apps installing things without permissions (and you've given tips on how to remove them).

Can you make a blog post about Java Quick Starter? I wanna find out how to get rid of that in my startup (jqs.exe) and in Firefox... THANK YOU SO MUCH :) !! (Keep up the good work; I love WinPatrol!!)
